How To Be Comfortable With Being Uncomfortable With Ben Aldridge

Today my guest on the show was Ben Aldridge. We discussed his journey from debilitating anxiety to climbing Mount Everest on his stairs and how we, as addicts can apply the skills he has learned to manage his emotions to help us get our drink and drug use under control.

Ben’s journey started like most of us in denial. He started getting really bad anxiety and panic attacks, but was convinced it was not his mind. He clung to the belief that it was a physical problem so he went to see a doctor who unfortunately popped this bubble and spotted Ben's symptoms as anxiety immediately.

After this realisation, Ben went on a deep exploration to learn the tools to manage his thoughts and emotions. A journey that many addicts in recovery can relate to.

He read a lot of books on physiology, CBT, Buddhism, self-help and mindset. On the podcast, we dive deep into each topic and the importance of having tools in place so that you can handle any situation and manage your thoughts and emotions. This will allow you to get your drink or drug use under control.

Ultimately this journey of reading led Ben to what he coined the year of adversity. This was a year when he tried countless challenges to expose himself to uncomfortable situations that pushed him outside of his comfort zone. This exposure therapy coupled with the foundational tools that he had learned allowed him to rapidly grow his mental resilience!

It starts with practical concepts and ends with challenges. It starts with ancient Greece and ends up with you sat in an ice bath cursing me.

Ben tried everything from wearing the wrong clothes for the weather to picking locks, learned a language to discovering how to use tetras to regulate your emotions and lower your anxiety. During our conversation, we go deep into more of the 42 weird and wonderful ways to build a strong resilient mindset that Ben outlines in his new book ‘How to be comfortable with being uncomfortable.'

We can learn a lot from Ben about how we can build a resilient growth mindset and how to use these tools and challenges to compound our mental growth over time. So listen to the episode now and you'll also get to hear my favourite story about how to feed the right wolf.
