1% Better Everyday with Nico Morales

Nico Morales knows firsthand that addiction can take over your life, pushing boundaries you never thought you’d cross.

His personal story is one of pushing through those boundaries, from casual marijuana use to hard drugs like heroin.

But instead of staying in the cycle of addiction, Nico found his way out by focusing on one key idea: getting 1% better every day.

It’s a simple, powerful mindset that helped him transform his life and now serves as the foundation for helping others do the same.

Early Struggles and Pushing Boundaries

Nico’s story started like many others—using drugs and alcohol as a way to escape.

Growing up, he experienced abandonment and emotional trauma, including the death of his primary caregiver, his grandfather, when Nico was just six years old.

These emotional wounds stuck with him throughout his childhood and into his teenage years.

At 14, Nico began using marijuana, and by the time he was 17, he was experimenting with harder substances.

One thing Nico emphasizes about addiction is how we push our personal boundaries. In the beginning, he set rules for himself: "I’ll never try harder drugs," or "I’ll never inject anything."But as his addiction progressed, he found himself breaking each one of those rules, going further and further into dangerous territory:

“I used to make fun of people who were injecting drugs, saying I’d never be like them. But eventually, I did exactly that. That’s how addiction works—it makes you push past every line you thought you’d never cross.”

Hitting Rock Bottom

His turning point came after years of battling addiction.

He eventually became dependent on heroin and lost nearly everything.

At one point, he was evicted from his apartment, distanced from family and friends, and left to fend for himself.

His addiction had taken over, pushing him further into isolation.

It was during one of his darkest moments, when his family stepped in and showed him the fear they had for him, that he realised how far he’d fallen:

“My mom found me passed out with a gun in one hand and a bottle in the other. That’s when I saw the fear in her eyes and knew I needed to change.”

The 1% Better Mindset

Instead of focusing on the daunting idea of completely transforming his life overnight, Nico decided to take a more realistic approach: getting 1% better every day.

This idea became the backbone of his recovery.

The concept is simple—each day, make one small improvement, no matter how minor it seems. Over time, those small steps add up to big changes.

Nico started by making small, manageable goals, like going a few hours without drinking or using substances. Gradually, those hours turned into full days, and days turned into weeks.

He applied the same principle to other areas of his life, from repairing relationships to regaining his physical health. Little by little, his life began to improve.

“If you can make it through a few hours, you can make it through a day. And if you can make it through a day, you can make it through a week. Just focus on getting a little better, and over time, you’ll be amazed at how far you’ve come.”

Tools for Recovery

Nico’s journey didn’t rely on any one thing. Instead, it was a combination of strategies that helped him stay on track.

Here are a few of the tools he used:
- Protecting What Comes In: Nico became mindful of what he allowed into his world—what he listened to, watched, and the people he surrounded himself with. He avoided negative influences and focused on positive inputs that aligned with his goals.
- Physical Movement: Whenever cravings hit, Nico would change his physical state. He would do push-ups, take a walk, or engage in some other physical activity to distract himself and redirect his energy.
- Community and Accountability: Finding the right people to hold him accountable was key to Nico’s success. He built a supportive network that helped him stay focused and accountable for his progress.
- Faith: Nico leaned on his faith, finding comfort in a higher power. He credits his belief in God as a constant presence that helped him replace the substances he once relied on.

What Stood Out to Me

What stood out to me about Nico Morales’ story from an addiction counsellor’s perspective is his focus on incremental change.

His “1% better every day” approach is a powerful mindset for those in recovery, emphasising manageable progress rather than overwhelming transformation. I also appreciated how Nico highlighted the role of community, accountability, and faith, which are critical components of long-term recovery.

His ability to integrate physical movement and mindfulness into his recovery tools shows a holistic approach that can be very effective for clients struggling with addiction.
