When Being Selfish Is Selfless

Often times we get so busy and caught up in life it feels like we are running 1000 miles per hour. We run around looking after everything, doing things for our friends, bosses, work colleagues, husband/wife/kids, the list goes on and on.

We get caught up in activities, hobbies and work. Our minds are always racing, focusing and processing. Even when we are in the car we have the radio on or if we are commuting on the train then its music.

” We don’t take time to just stop and thing or do things for ourselves
Luke Worsfold

I have been reflecting on self-care a lot recently and specifically on showing myself, love.

Once on my 23rd birthday, I created what I called a self-love day. It was based on the fact you get to do whatever you want on your birthday and everyone always asks the classic “what do you want to do on your birthday”. So I decided to fill my day with anything and everything I wanted to do and loved doing. I made it just about me and showing myself as much love as possible on that day.

The day started by me getting the train to London for a Sanctus coffee morning. This was an event run by a company called Sanctus where we all just sat and spoke about vulnerability and our emotions and shared with each other. I really enjoyed this because it is the opposite of Facebook, it is a place where we all put down our masks and showed up as our authentic selves.

From there I went for a spa day. I trained in the gym in the spa and did a really good workout to get the blood pumping and the endorphins circulating. It was then onto the jazzy and sauna which were unbelievably relaxing. There was also an amazing swimming pool with a massive tap that massages your shoulders. They even had a silent room full of oxygen and I did mediation and let everything I was holding on to go. I literally felt the weight fall off my shoulders. It didn’t finish their thought because next came the massage which relaxed and loosened all the muscles in my body. I left the spa feeling like I was buddha.

Once I finished at the spa I caught the train home and went to Alanon. I love Alanon because it allows me to reflect and share was in my heart. It takes me from my head and forces me to reflect on what I feel and what is going on down inside. This whole day was amazing and I have been thinking about it more recently as my life has got increasingly busier. When I look back on that day it reminds me of the importance of taking time for ourselves and how being selfish can sometimes be the most selfless thing we do. Because once we have that break we come back feeling refreshed and calm with the ability to contribute more to people.

” It allows us to refill our tank and give from our overflow rather than being on empty all the time
Luke Worsfold

Now I encourage you to take your own self-love hour or 4 or even a whole day. Yes, a day! Because you truly deserve it.
